Work Fun

So, Clare mentioned work meetings...let me tell you, those are some fun things. Here at my job, we have meeting after meeting after meeting, most of which are spent discussing how far behind we are and how much we have to get done. Now, I may not be the smartest person on earth, but I THINK actually doing the work instead of having meetings about the work would result in it getting done much faster.

The other thing about these meetings is that I have to go to all of them. Now I don't have a huge backlog of important work sitting at my desk just waiting to be finished, so I don't really care, but I do have things I could be doing. And not having any background in accounting, I have little to no idea what is being discussed. So, I just sit there, doodling in my beautiful spiral notebook that I ordered for myself last time I ordered copy paper, and wait for someone to say, "Oh Hannah could do that," and then try to figure out what it is I'm supposed to do. There is always so much joy at work.

Besides the meetings, I now have the fun task of writing a letter to our clients explaining the new 2003 tax act. Of course, no matter how many times I read the summary brochure, or how many pages I slog through in the inch thick complete guide, I still do not comprehend tax law, which is, by definition, incomprehensible. So, how does one explain something that one doesn't even understand?

Luckily I have the valuable life experience of writing dozens and dozens of papers by summarizing and compiling notes on books I barely skimmed. I just hope the finished product is what my boss is looking for, since he gave me no details whatsoever. Basically, he told me to write this letter, and that it should be simple to read, but complicated to understand, thus ensuring that our clients feel we have provided them a valuable service, and at the same time, feel that tax law is much too complex and they cannot get by without our assistance.
